AED stands for automated external defibrillator. Defibrillation is a vital link in the chain of events that must happen for a person to survive a cardiac emergency. They are lightweight, portable devices that automatically analyze heart rhythms and determine if a shock is needed. If the shock is needed, it gives audio and visual prompts to guide trained operators. They are easy to use, safe and incredibly effective.

FACTS:Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of death in this country.SCA claim the lives of 325,000 people each year - that's one adult every 1-2 minutes. Cardiac arrest is completely unpredictable. It can strike anyone, anywhere, anytime - even while at work. Unfortunately, 95% of these victims do not survive because it takes too much time for medical professionals with an AED to arrive, if at all. AED's are the most promising method of treating SCA, but they must deliver a shock within 5 minutes of the victim in order to be effective. |
