Investigators discovered the body of a woman in her 50s while they were going through the building. They haven't released her name at this time. One person was taken to the hospital for leg injuries from jumping from a second-story apartment. As many as 30 people lost everything they own in the fire, and now fire investigators are trying to find out what started it. The fire began at 5:24 a.m. at the apartment complex at 750 South and 650 West. The fire forced residents outside, many left without shoes to escape the flames. Resident Daniel Anderson said, "All of the sudden I heard people pounding on my door saying, ‘You have to get out, there is a fire.'" Anderson was asleep when neighbors woke him up to tell him the apartment building was on fire. He got dressed but didn't have time to put on his shoes. He stepped outside to take a look and saw flames shooting everywhere. He said, "I was terrified, I was very cold because I didn't have a coat. I had to walk in the snow with just my socks. It was just no fun, not at all." When firefighters arrived, the apartment building was fully engulfed. By the time the fire was out, 12 units were destroyed, but firefighters say it could have been worse had the apartments not been built under current building codes. Provo Deputy Fire Chief Gary Jolley said, "The fireblock did what it was suppose to do and stopped the fire from spreading to other apartments. It did affect 12 apartments, but it saved the rest of the apartments from the effect of the fire." With temperatures in the teens, firefighters had to deal with water that was quickly freezing, although it did not damper their efforts. At the local chapter of the American Red Cross, the victims were able to get warm, eat and find some help. Garr Judd, with the American Red Cross, said, "We can get you the resources you need, whether it is a place to stay, whether it is clothing, whether it is food, we will be here and work with you to make sure you get those things that you need." Residents now are faced with starting over since everything they own is now gone. Anderson said, "I'm worried. I've been pacing up and down all morning, worrying about it." The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
