What you have on hand when a disaster happens can make a big difference. Plan to store enough supplies for everyone in your household for at least three days. Make sure you include any necessary items for infants, seniors and people with disabilities in your kit. Store your disaster supplies in a sturdy but easy-to-carry container. A large covered trash container, overnight backpack or duffel bag will work. Keep a smaller version of the kit in your vehicle. If you become stranded or are not able to return home, having some items with you will help you be more comfortable until help arrives.

What paperwork (copies) should I have in my kit?

identification cards, social security numbers, insurance policies (home, auto, etc.), birth certificates, marriage certificates, passports and contact information for family members and loved ones (including an out of state contact)

* Place copies inside a waterproof bag such as a ziploc.

Major items to be included:

water (3 gallons per person)

food (non-perishable)

flashlight with batteries

first aid kit with resource guide

medications (prescribed and OTC)

battery-operated radio

tools (can opener, duct tape, etc.)

clothing (sturdy shoes)

personal items (eyeglasses, etc.)

sanitary supplies

important documents

money (cash)

contact information

pet supplies

an area map
